We are tasked to create a computerized (RPG) Role Playing Game. We must think of a story for the game and then later on we must create a range of characters for our game. We have make a minimum of five different characters which are protagonists and also another 5 more antagonists. We are to create a range of sketches and renders using digital media as part of our evidence for our assignment brief. We are also creating a story for the game so that the viewers can understand the game and the story of the game in a minimum of 500 words. As well as making a story for the game and creating the characters we are also create a design proposal document which will show the development of the game, showing designs, sketches, concept art and story throughout the project.
To get an idea of what I want to create I will be doing some research on RPG games, what games are RPG’s and also some research on game mechanics as part of our assignment brief. List of RPG’s: I wanted to create a list of different RPG’s so that I can check if I need to look into the games, story, character’s etc to get some ideas and inspiration. - Dark Souls - Mass Effect - World of Warcraft - Runescape - Diablo - South park Stick of Truth - Final Fantasy - Dragon Age - The Witcher - The Elder Scrolls - Shadow of Mordor - Bloodborne Game Mechanics These are the list of mechanics that you will find in a game The Idea and Story To make things slightly easier our lecturer has given us a name of a book each which was chosen from a bowl and what book we got we have to create the RPG game based on that book, I am not a book reader so this will be interesting. The book that I got was Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, 1908. A book about animals I believe, I had a small look at the the description and the story that was described, it seems interesting but no ideas came out unfortunately so far. Maybe something will inspire me later on.
Research & Ideas
The research into The Wind and the Willows was that I listened to the story of the original book and then as I was going through it I wrote down notes and ideas I had as I was listening to the video. I watched a range of videos on YouTube the first one, The Wind in the Willows. Episode 1, The River Bank. This is a visual story which was narrated by Paul Honeyman and illustrated by John Worsley. I watched all of the episodes which you can find on YouTube which I will put a link in this document, the illustration gave me the ideas and what design style I was going to go for. Part of the brief it says that we must create five good guys and five bad guys.
Looking over at some already made RPG games I researched making sure they were RPG’s these games gave me an idea because these games are a story and resolve around the player making the decisions. You may have seen this if you played the Mass Effect series where your actions in any conversation could change the game and the ending of the story. A studio called Tell-tales have also started making games specifically for the story and the player that can turn a story around depending on what the players does. One game called the Walking Dead was a massive success because of story and the different actions that can occur depending on which one you choose. I would like my game to be based around the actions the player choose with the character and depending on these actions you choose you will create friends or foes depending on which ones you choose. Throughout the actual story of the book the moll which will be the main character comes out of hibernation and then meets new people on the way. The way these illustrations show it looks to be a more classical way with the old fashion vehicles that are illustrated and the boats, in my concept I would like to modernise the game and have more modern feel to the game to make sure that the players experience looks more fun.
